Measuring Wooden Blinds
Wooden blinds make an excellent addition to nearly any room in the home. They can be stained or painted and they offer a warm and inviting look that matches most decors. In this article we are going to discuss how to go about measuring wooden blinds.
If you don’t have the money to hire a professional decorator or if you simply like doing things on your own, hanging blinds is a fairly simple process. Of course, there are a few things that can go wrong, but instructions for these blinds are often easy to follow. That is because most people choose to hang them up themselves.
What to do? The first and most important step is measuring the window. This is something you must do before you actually purchase the blinds and put them up. Not surprisingly, the most common reason that blinds are returned is that they are not the right size, as if they had suddenly shrunk or grown after they were purchased.
Of course, the explanation for this common mistake is that homeowners don’t know how to take measurements for window treatments. Part of the problem is that there are two popular types of mounts: an inside mount and an outside mount. Let us take a moment to explain the difference between them.
A standard inside mount means that measurements must be taken inside the actual window frame. The handyman or woman should always use a steel tape measure and should round down to the nearest 1/8”. Measurements should be taken and recorded at the top, the centre and the bottom of the inside of the window frame. The number that should be used for the width is the narrowest one. The same should be done for the height—left, right, centre—and the tallest height should be recorded.
For the outside mount, homeowners must measure the width of the opening from the outside edge of the window. When these measurements have been recorded, it is common to add at least 3 inches to each side to adjust for the light gap. In closing, it is important to note that the width is always indicated before the height.
